Entering Meta’s Special Ad Category: A New Playing Field
Unlike regular ad campaigns, political ads fall under Meta’s Special Ad Category, which comes with strict rules and additional layers of verification.
Since this was a newly created public page for the candidate, the process began with compliance:
- A domain had to be connected
- Identity verification was mandatory
- A clear ad disclaimer was required, stating who paid for the ad
These steps aren’t optional. Without completing them, your ads simply won’t run—no matter how good your creatives or targeting strategy are.
This alone makes political advertising very different from standard Meta campaigns.
The Real Challenge: Deciphering Constituencies in Meta Ads
One of the most time-consuming parts of the process was mapping the constituency correctly inside Meta’s ad platform.
Unlike city-based or radius targeting used in business ads, political ads demand absolute precision. Constituencies don’t always align neatly with Meta’s predefined geographic boundaries, which means:
- You must carefully analyze location segments
- Cross-verify constituency limits
- Avoid accidental overreach (which can trigger rejections)
This step requires patience, local knowledge, and a lot of trial-and-error.
When Location Backfires: An Unexpected Rejection
Here’s where things got interesting.
At the time, my current location was set to Doha, as I had traveled there for work. However, the campaign itself was meant for Kochi, and Meta’s systems flagged this mismatch.
Because the advertiser’s location didn’t align with the political geography being targeted, the ads were rejected.
This is one of those issues you won’t find clearly documented—but it can stop an entire campaign in its tracks.
Meta Support to the Rescue
Thankfully, Meta’s support system stepped in at the right moment.
After explaining the situation and verifying the details, the issue was reviewed and resolved. Once the location discrepancy was clarified, the ads were approved and began running smoothly.
This experience reinforced an important truth:
In sensitive categories like political advertising, human support and proper communication matter just as much as technical setup.
Performance, Impact, and the Final Result
Despite the initial hurdles, the campaign performed well:
- Strong reach within the constituency
- High engagement from the target audience
- Clear message delivery within compliance limits
And most importantly—the candidate won.
While elections are influenced by many factors beyond ads, executing a compliant, well-targeted digital campaign definitely played its role.

Final Thoughts
Running political ads isn’t about quick wins or growth hacks. It’s about responsibility, accuracy, compliance, and adaptability.
If you’re planning campaigns in regulated or sensitive categories, make sure you’re working with marketers who’ve actually been there—handled rejections, spoken to support teams, and delivered results under pressure.
At MindOverMaze, we don’t just run ads.
We navigate complexity—so your message reaches the right people, the right way.
